In 2024, a record 40,009 CVEs were published, a 38% increase from 2023. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) noted that the rise in CVEs and insufficient support led to a backlog in processing new CVEs, starting in February 2024.

Recent news about potential cuts to MITRE funding for the Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures (CVE) program has raised concern in the security community.
